Different Types of Partial Dentures Explained

Different types of partial dentures including acrylic, flexible and metal framework partial dentures.

If you’re missing one or more teeth but still have healthy natural teeth remaining, a partial denture is likely on your radar — but there’s more than one type to choose from. Here’s a quick, skimmable rundown of the four main options.

1. Acrylic Partial

Made from pink acrylic to match your gums, with metal clasps gripping the adjacent natural teeth.

  • Most affordable option
  • Easiest to adjust or extend if more teeth need to be added later
  • Best for: budget-conscious patients, or those who expect further tooth loss and want a partial that can grow with them
  • Lifespan: 5 to 7 years with proper care

2. Flexible Partial

Made from a soft, pink-toned, nylon-based material that flexes gently with the movement of your mouth, with no visible metal clasps.

  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Discreet — popular specifically for front tooth replacements
  • Best for: aesthetics, particularly front teeth, and patients who want comfort without visible metalwork
  • Lifespan: 3 to 7 years — the material can stain more than acrylic and can’t be relined as easily

3. PEEK Partial

A modern, metal-free option combining high strength with excellent aesthetics.

  • Strong and durable without any visible metal
  • Discreet appearance similar to flexible partials, with more strength
  • Best for: patients wanting a metal-free option with more durability than flexible materials offer

4. Metal (Cobalt-Chrome or Titanium) Partial

A thin metal framework that distributes chewing forces efficiently across the denture.

  • Thinner and less bulky than acrylic, despite being stronger
  • Excellent durability and support for heavier chewing loads
  • Best for: back teeth and situations where strength and long-term durability matter most
  • Metal clasps are visible, though tooth-coloured clasp options exist in certain cases

Which One Is Right for You?

The right choice depends on where the missing teeth are, your budget, and how much you prioritise appearance versus strength. Our guides on partial dentures for front teeth and partial dentures for back teeth go into more detail on which materials suit each situation, and our comprehensive guide on partial dentures in New Zealand — types, cost, and what to expect covers the process and pricing in full.
